There’s a wide range of things to do here…

There’s a wide range of things to do here, and it’s definitely not just copying and filing. It’s a very small office that does a lot of good work, and is a fantastic experience in nonprofit, immigration, and legal work. I’ve been very impressed, and they have a really good set of staff. They’re friendly and honest and experienced in immigration law. It’s a good chance to learn how both a small nonprofit office works, and how to give reliable legal services to clients. There’s always something for someone to do here, and you never feel like you’re wasting your time. -Samantha Lyon, Intern, Smith College

I am very grateful to Just Neighbors…

TheresaI am very grateful to Just Neighbors for helping me find a career I love! I started with Just Neighbors thinking helping immigrants would be my second passion behind my future environmental career, but instead I fell in love with immigration law and with helping immigrants find their way in our wonderful country. I am currently a paralegal at a corporate immigration firm and hope to be an immigration lawyer in a few years. I truly owe my new life path to Just Neighbors! --Theresa Meehan, Volunteer & law student at UVA

It is incredibly rewarding to volunteer…

Deferred Action 007It is incredibly rewarding to volunteer at Just Neighbors because it has the whole package: important mission, dedicated staff, competent leadership, ready access to support, processes and systems in place to ensure success, and not least, a pleasant environment in which to work and congenial colleagues. Its double entendre name is an apt description of its purpose: to humbly welcome new neighbors into the community by providing immigration legal services that confer a measure of justice on those for whom it might be otherwise out of reach because of limited resources. Hundreds of people from all over the world who have located in northern Virginia are assisted each year in navigating the intricacies of U.S. immigration law to become lawful permanent residents and ultimately citizens. Of special concern to the law and to the mission are women who have suffered domestic violence or who have otherwise been the victim of crimes. Their stories are often quite touching, but they find joy in the newfound status that we help them achieve. Recently, the “Dreamers” have become an added focus of the organization, now a major contributor to the success of the President’s initiative to enable young adults security from deportation and the opportunity to be legally employed. The gratitude of those served, often passionately expressed, provides volunteers a high ratio of psychic income to effort expended! –Joe Keyes, Volunteer Attorney

I initially sought to work with Just Neighbors…

Jorge BonillaI initially sought to work with Just Neighbors because, as an immigrant myself, I knew the importance of advocacy and legal services for immigrants who cannot fend for themselves and are often targets for exploitation by those seeking to make money. My own parents experienced just that when they accidentally purchased money orders from a fraudulent company that duped many in the early 2000s. How they were able to scrounge up the money again in order to renew our Temporary Protected Statuses, I’ll never know. This personal memory as well as the experiences of others that I’ve encountered while working for Just Neighbors have truly convinced me to continue studying government, public policy, and languages in hopes of attending graduate or law school one day so I might help those who cannot help themselves, just as the attorneys and staff members at Just Neighbors do each and every day. Nothing can replicate the feeling you get when you see a man receive his Green Card, or hear a mother’s reaction when she is told that she will be reunited with her son. That’s not to say that the news is always positive, but the work done by nonprofits such as Just Neighbors is profoundly important nonetheless. In the span of a mere two months, I truly feel that I have gained better insight into what exactly I want to do with my life, both academically and professionally, largely because of the opportunities and experiences I was afforded by Just Neighbors. When I first set foot in the office in June, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I wasn’t sure what path I wanted to take in life. I am now. -Jorge Bonillo, Intern, Dartmouth College

Interning at Just Neighbors was an invaluable…

t shirt 8Interning at Just Neighbors [was] a very rewarding, eye-opening, and educational experience. From the beginning, I felt at home and I strongly believe it is because of the loving and welcoming staff and volunteers working here at Just Neighbors. I think one of the things that make Just Neighbors unique is that it truly does value the work and opinions of its volunteers, which is probably one of the reasons why I felt a sense of belonging here. I am very glad I had the opportunity to intern at Just Neighbors. I highly recommend this internship experience to anyone who is interested in making a difference in people’s lives. --Jennifer Araujo, summer intern

I am so grateful for the opportunity…

Clients with cynthiaI am so grateful for the opportunity that Just Neighbors gives me to help struggling immigrants achieve their dreams.  When I help a domestic abuse victim obtain visas so that her children can join her here in Virginia, I know that their lives will be forever changed. When I prepare the paperwork for an asylee or refugee to obtain legal permanent residence, I can see him taking one more step toward his ultimate goal of U.S. citizenship.  After careers in service to the federal government and private industry, it is a joy to have real people as clients and be able to make a difference in their lives. --Cynthia Ingersoll, Volunteer Attorney
