Alejandra* came to the United States after the civil war in El Salvador because she saw no other path to safety or survival. Determined to provide for her family, she worked tirelessly selling bread on the streets, often enduring hunger herself so that her household could eat. Despite her unwavering efforts, she lived in crushing poverty, struggled to meet even the most basic necessities, and watched her community become increasingly consumed by crime, fear, and instability.
As gangs tightened their grip on her neighborhood, violence became an unavoidable part of daily life. She was assaulted on two separate occasions. During one robbery, gang members held a knife against her stomach while threatening her. In that moment, she believed her life could end at any second. The trauma of those attacks left her living in constant fear, never knowing whether the next encounter would be her last.
Eventually, Alejandra realized that remaining in El Salvador meant risking not only her own life but also the future of her seven-year-old daughter, Maria. With no meaningful protection, no realistic opportunity to escape the violence, and no hope of raising her child in peace, she made the heartbreaking decision to leave behind the only home she had ever known. Together, they crossed the United States border in Arizona on July 17, 1999 without being apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol. The journey was filled with uncertainty, fear, and unimaginable hardship, but she believed risking everything was the only way to give her daughter the opportunity to live free from the violence that had defined their lives.
In 2001, Alejandra and her eldest daughter were granted TPS. That same year, she married her husband in the United States, where together they built a new life and welcomed two more children. Although tragedy struck in 2012 when her husband passed away from a heart attack, leaving her to raise their children alone, she never lost sight of the future she had envisioned for them. Today, her eldest daughter is a United States citizen, married to a member of the United States Marine Corps, and serves her community as a substitute teacher. Her second daughter proudly serves in the United States Air Force, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to serving the country she calls home. Her youngest child dreams of one day serving the United States as well. Watching her children grow into compassionate, responsible, and service-minded individuals has become one of Alejandra's greatest accomplishments. Their success represents the future she once feared they would never have.
Alejandra's journey took another life-changing turn when she learned about Just Neighbors through her church while seeking legal assistance to obtain lawful permanent resident status through her daughter. She shared that words cannot fully express the profound impact the organization has had on her life. She described one of Just Neighbors' attorneys as someone who did far more than provide legal representation—they stood beside her, believed in her, and guided her through one of the most significant chapters of her life. "She didn't just help me; she stood up for me," the client recalled. "Having her support was an incredible blessing." She spoke with deep gratitude about the compassion and respect her attorney showed throughout the process, accompanying her to interviews, listening patiently to her story, and treating her not simply as a client, but as a person deserving of dignity. "She gave me her time not only as an attorney, but as a human being," she reflected. "She made me feel seen, heard, and believed."
Through the dedication and advocacy of Just Neighbors, Alejandra obtained lawful permanent resident status—a milestone that transformed her life. Beyond legal security, permanent residency opened the door to better employment opportunities, greater financial stability, and the ability to provide for her family without the constant fear that her immigration status would jeopardize everything she had worked so hard to build. More importantly, it gave her peace of mind. For the first time in many years, she felt secure knowing that the sacrifices she had made to protect her family had led to the future she had always hoped for.
Reflecting on her experience, Alejandra believes one of the most important decisions an immigrant can make is to seek trustworthy legal guidance. She encourages others facing circumstances similar to her own to pursue qualified legal assistance because obtaining lawful status is more than completing paperwork—it is the foundation for stability, opportunity, and hope. She shared that she will always be grateful for finding Just Neighbors because the organization gave her far more than legal representation. It gave her the confidence to move forward, the security to rebuild her life, and the opportunity to continue building the future she had long envisioned for herself and her family. Today, whenever she meets someone facing the same uncertainty and fear she once experienced, she does not hesitate to recommend Just Neighbors. She believes the compassion, dedication, and unwavering support she received are unlike anything she could have found elsewhere.
Today, after more than twenty-five years in the United States, Alejandra is proud of the life she has built through perseverance, faith, and hard work. She is an active member of her church, where she has faithfully served for more than twelve years as the coordinator of the welcoming committee and leader of the church's evangelical group. She strives to ensure that every person who walks through the church doors feels welcomed, valued, and loved. Her faith has shaped the person she is today and inspires her to serve others with compassion and humility.
Looking back, Alejandra believes her greatest achievement is seeing the life her children now have. "My three children have a better future than the one I could have given them in my country," she shared. "There, we lived with hunger, countless hardships, and constant crime." She remains profoundly grateful to the United States and to the people and organizations, especially Just Neighbors, who gave her and her family a second chance. She believes that people who come to this country seeking safety and opportunity, as she once did, simply want the chance to work honestly, contribute to their communities, and build a better future for their families. She hopes to continue giving back to the country that welcomed her by serving her community, supporting those around her, and living a life defined by integrity, compassion, and faith. Her story demonstrates that the impact of compassionate legal advocacy extends far beyond one immigration case—it transforms lives, strengthens families, enriches communities, and creates opportunities that endure for generations.
“Thank you, Just Neighbors, for giving me hope when I felt hopeless, for standing beside me when I felt alone, and for helping me build the future I once thought was impossible. I will always carry your kindness with me.”
