WHAT WE DO

Our Impact

Low-income immigrants and refugees often face many hurdles, everything from putting food on the table to understanding English. Here at Just Neighbors, we know that immigrants and refugees in our community are striving to achieve their own version of the American Dream. That’s why Just Neighbors offers compassionate immigration legal services. To us, compassion means you can speak to a real person when you call our office; during your appointment, our volunteers and staff will listen to your story and hear your needs and our attorneys will offer trustworthy advice and assistance with your immigration situation.

The compassion and professionalism that we strive to provide to our clients is not possible without the help of our volunteers. Just Neighbors relies on volunteers to help us with telephone intakes, interpretation, case work and more. Volunteers allow us to double the number of clients we can serve. Volunteerism also forges connections and mutual understanding between immigrant and non-immigrant community members resulting in a stronger and closer community for all.

The impact of a client receiving immigration legal services from Just Neighbors is felt not just by the client themselves but by the many generations who through legal status gain more stability and resources. Businesses also benefit from Just Neighbors’ work because they gain dedicated community members who are now authorized to work. When one member of our community gains independence, financial stability, safety, and assurance, the entire community benefits. The impact of Just Neighbors immigration legal services affects all of us.

Every time Just Neighbors takes on a new case we are opening the door for a future filled with stability and independence for our client’s and their families. For every client Just Neighbors takes on we have to turn three away due to capacity limitations. Since Just Neighbors provides services to immigrants and refugees who qualify for humanitarian-based immigration relief, the majority of our clients are survivors of domestic violence, violent crimes, or persecution. Our goal is to help everyone who qualifies for our services, access the immigration legal services they need.

OUR AREAS OF SERVICE

Just Neighbors exclusively practices humanitarian-based immigration law allowing us to focus on helping the most vulnerable immigrants in our community.

CRIME VICTIMS

Congress has created special visas that give immigrant victims of domestic violence (VAWA), violent crimes (U-visa), and trafficking (T-visa) a pathway to apply for a green card.

DACA & TPS

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and TPS (Temporary Protected Status) both offer eligible recipients a promise not to deport and a temporary work permit. Neither DACA nor TPS offer a pathway to a green card. The future of DACA and TPS, for certain designated countries, will be determined by federal court cases that are currently in litigation.

ASYLUM

Every year people come to the United States seeking protection because they have suffered persecution or fear that they will suffer persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, and/or political opinion in their country of origin.

REMOVAL DEFENSE

Removal defense involves representing and advocating for immigrants facing deportation from the United States. For many immigrants facing removal from the United States, the process involves appearing before an immigration judge in immigration court.

REFUGEE & ASYLEE ADJUSTMENT

U.S. immigration law allows refugees and asylees to apply for lawful permanent resident (LPR) status after they have been physically present in the U.S. for at least one year since being granted asylum.

FAMILY REUNIFICATION

Immigrants often leave behind their loved ones in their countries of origin. Many Just Neighbors clients are parents who sought to build a better life in America and then bring their children over. Unfortunately, poverty often makes this a long and impossible process. Just Neighbors helps our clients with consular processing to reunite them with their children and parents here in America.
